This is my fourth week as a work experience student/intern at outside the box, so far, so good. Not an ounce of photocopying in sight and yes, I’ve made cups of tea – but I’ve had them made for me too.
When I first walked into the outside the box office I was warmed by its light filled corridors, colourful signage and through into reception I was enthusiastically greeted by the company’s Director of First Impressions, Lynsey.
After being assigned my own laptop and desk (yes, a desk all to myself) I was straight away I given my individual ongoing project which I’ve relished.
The informal, relaxed work area has just been condensed to the second floor, so the marketing, design and online teams are working closer together.
There is a constant hive of activity in the spacious room and I’ve noticed that the conversation and banter keeps a healthy balance of work and social interaction with my colleagues. In the background I can hear the light noise of metal music coming from someone’s computer – now that is something I may have to influence as the weeks go on and introduce some softer sounds. Don’t worry, I won’t be going anywhere near the atrocity that is ‘drum and bass’ – they’re safe from that genre.
But despite the friendly chat and chin-wags, it’s the clients that come first for this lot. I’ve already witnessed the staff really going out of their way for their work and after joining a creative meeting on my first day, I know I’ve got a lot to live up to.
However, that’s why I’m here. I really want to expand my experience within integrated marketing and I’m able to use my skills, in particular those with social media, to contribute to the expansion of the business. I’m gaining real experience in a successful agency that know their stuff and who are prepared to share their knowledge with me.
So thanks to all at outside the box who’ve made me felt truly welcome and I’m grateful for not having to remember a regular big tea run. “It was milky tea with no sugar wasn’t it? No, black tea three sugars? Oh, coffee with sweetener.” There lies the real reason I don’t make a round of hot drinks too often...
