Phones for the future

Last week, Nokia released their very first Windows Phone to the world, and with the recent release of the iPhone 4s, it seems like perfect timing to look at the evolution of mobile phones!

In 1973, Dr. Martin Cooper made a phone call from a rather chunky looking Motorola. To be honest, I was surprised to see how ‘small’ it was.

There were previous ‘mobile phones’ before this particular model, but they were the massive boxes that weighed about 20KG! This was actually a hand held piece of plastic, with 12 buttons and an ariel; capable of connecting you with anyone else fortunate enough to have £3,000 lying around to buy one themselves.

It was, however, truly revolutionary, and nearly 40 years on, the phones that we now carry around in our pockets can do things that were unimaginable back then.

I remember sitting on the swings in my local park guiding a pixelated ‘Snake’ around the screen using the 2, 4, 6 and 8 keys on my Nokia 3310. Now I sit here swiping my finger across a 3.5-inch multi touch widescreen to shoot ‘Angry Birds’ at disgruntled pigs – who would have thought it.

I recall everyone at school getting excited about the colour screen, then the flip phone, the slide phone, then the touch screen phone….it felt like a never ending list of gizmos were constantly  being updated to the spec of a phone. And it’s scary the rate at which the technology has improved! The new iPhone 4s can listen to you! You can instruct it to set a meeting for you, to type out a text message, even ask what the weather is like, all through voice command!

It has only been 11 years since the first mobile phone with built in camera was released. Today, the Nokia Windows phone is effectively a computer….which makes me wonder, what’s next?!

Is there going to be something else after touch screen? Is there even going to be a screen?!
