‘Upstairs at the Vic’

A photo discovery

As a photographer, I have always been fascinated by derelict and abandoned places.

I love the effect that the passage of time has on structures, creating unusual shapes, textures and colours, the gradual decay inflicted by both man and nature.

I was therefore chuffed to bits when I got permission to shoot ‘Upstairs at the Vic’.

The Victoria Hotel in the centre of Leeds was built in 1865 to provide hotel accommodation for people attending the Assizes Court at Leeds Town Hall opposite. However, the hotel rooms have not been used since the late 1960’s. Intrigued by the possibilities this could offer, I asked the manager if I could have a look round.

What I found was a mix of Victorian Gothic, 1930’s fireplaces and garish floral wallpaper from the late ‘60’s. All in various stages of melancholy decay.

As there was no electricity on any of the floors I had to choose the perfect weather and time of day to get the right light conditions, as I was after dramatic highlights and shadows. I used 2 cameras, a Leica D-Lux 5 with a 24mm lens for the colour, digital shots and a Voigtlander Bessa L with 15mm lens for the black and white stuff.

It was a rare opportunity to capture images in a unique space before it disappears forever, as there are plans to turn them into luxury apartments in the future.

Enough waffle, look at the pics!
